How to choose a small camper

Small campers cover two quite different ideas. Teardrops and compact singles are hard-sided throughout — secure, quick to set up and usable in any weather. Hybrid expandables add fold-out canvas bunk ends, giving you far more sleeping space for the same towed length.

Because they are short, they fit campsites that turn away bigger rigs, reverse easily and often store in a standard garage or driveway. Many weigh under 3,500 lb loaded, which puts them within reach of a mid-size SUV.

The compromise is amenities. Some have a wet bath and a proper galley; others put the kitchen in a rear hatch and skip the bathroom entirely. Decide whether an on-board toilet is a requirement before you narrow the list.

People do, but it takes discipline. Storage, tank capacity and the lack of separate spaces are the real limits. For extended stays most full-timers move up to at least a 25 ft trailer.

Are expandable hybrids worth it?

If you need to sleep more than two and want to keep towed length down, yes — they give you the sleeping capacity of a much larger trailer. Just budget the extra setup time and dry the canvas before storing.
