How to choose a travel trailer

Start with your tow vehicle, not the trailer. Find the payload figure on the driver-door jamb sticker, subtract passengers and gear, and what remains is what you can put on the hitch. Tongue weight is typically 10–15% of the loaded trailer, and payload runs out long before tow rating does on most half-ton pickups and SUVs.

Then work out sleeping capacity honestly. A trailer advertised as sleeping eight usually counts a convertible dinette and a jack-knife sofa. If four adults need real beds, look for a bunkhouse or a dedicated bedroom plus a proper Murphy bed.

Finally, think about where you actually camp. Many state parks cap site length at 30 ft, and anything over 32 ft narrows your options considerably. Slide-outs add living space but also weight, maintenance and a failure point — one slide is usually the sweet spot.

What can I tow a travel trailer with?

It depends on the trailer. Under 3,500 lb loaded, most mid-size SUVs and crossovers manage. From 3,500–5,000 lb you want a full-size SUV or mid-size pickup. Above 5,000 lb, a half-ton pickup with a weight-distribution hitch. Always check the payload sticker on your door jamb, not just the tow rating.

How much does a travel trailer cost?

Our inventory runs from around $8,000 for a compact single-axle unit to over $70,000 for a large luxury bunkhouse. Most families land between $20,000 and $40,000 for a well-equipped 25–30 ft trailer.

Do I need a weight distribution hitch?

Generally yes above about 5,000 lb loaded, or whenever the trailer tongue weight exceeds roughly 10% of your vehicle’s payload. It transfers load back onto the front axle, restoring steering and braking. Most manufacturers require one to honour the tow rating.

How long do travel trailers last?

A well-maintained trailer lasts 15–20 years. The limiting factor is almost always water intrusion, so reseal the roof and seams annually and inspect around windows, vents and the front cap every season.
