Buyer’s guide

How to choose a toy hauler

Measure your toys before you shop. Garage length is the number that matters, and manufacturers quote it from the ramp door to the garage wall. Add clearance for tie-downs and walking space — a 10 ft garage holds a dirt bike comfortably but is tight for a side-by-side.

Cargo capacity is the second constraint. A toy hauler with 3,000 lb of remaining capacity sounds generous until you add two ATVs, fuel, water and gear. Check the yellow cargo sticker, not the brochure.

Most toy haulers include a fuel station and a generator, both of which add weight and complexity but make the garage genuinely useful. Many now convert the garage into a patio deck or a bedroom with drop-down bunks, which is worth having even if you never carry a vehicle.

Best for

  • Carry bikes, ATVs and gear inside, out of the weather
  • Garage converts to extra sleeping or living space
  • Ramp door doubles as a patio deck on many models
  • Built-in fuel station and generator on most models

Worth considering

  • Heavier than an equivalent non-hauler
  • Garage space comes at the cost of living space
  • Fuel and exhaust fumes need careful ventilation
  • Higher tow vehicle requirements

Questions

Toy Hauler FAQs

How big a garage do I need?

A dirt bike needs about 8 ft, two dirt bikes around 10 ft, a UTV or side-by-side 12–14 ft, and a golf cart roughly 8 ft. Always add a foot or two beyond the machine length for tie-downs and access.

Can a toy hauler garage be used as a bedroom?

Yes — most modern toy haulers offer a drop-down queen bed, fold-away sofas or a happijac system that converts the garage into sleeping space in minutes. It is one of the most flexible layouts you can buy.

Are toy haulers heavier than regular trailers?

Yes. The reinforced frame, ramp door and fuel station typically add 1,000–2,000 lb over a comparable travel trailer, before you load anything into the garage.

Do toy haulers come as fifth wheels?

Both. Travel-trailer toy haulers suit half-ton and three-quarter-ton trucks; fifth-wheel toy haulers offer far larger garages and living space but need a heavier truck.
